Gerhard Hanappi

Gerhard Hanappi

Gerhard Hanappi is a Jean Monnet Professor for Political Economy of European Integration and Head of the Economics at the Institute for Mathematical Methods in Economics at the University of Technology in Vienna. He received his venia docendi for his book Evolutionary Economics. Towards a Revolution in the Social Sciences in 1993. In the early eighties he was econometrician at the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), then executive director of OECON consulting GmbH and assistant professor at the University of Technology of Vienna. In 1992 he was researcher at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. In 1994 he was in the position of executive director of the Research Unit Socioeconomics. In October 1996 he returned to the University of Technology of Vienna where he currently is member of the senate of the university.

Professor Hanappi has been project leader of a number of research projects mostly in the area of macroeconomic simulation and economic policy consulting. He is board member of the three internationally most important professional associations of evolutionary economists (ISS, EAEPE and Verein fr Socialpolitik, Evolutionre konomik) and served as associate editor for the Journal of Evolutionary Economics as well as for Electronic Commerce Research and Applications. He is also an international research fellow at the International Center for Electronic Commerce in Seoul, Korea.

He has published numerous papers on a wide range of topics including macroeconomics, Schumpeterean economics, history of economic thought, artificial intelligence, game theory, computer supported co-operative work, modeling and complexity, and gaming in economics. Professor Hanappi currently mainly works on the foundation and application of evolutionary economics, understood as transdisciplinary research. In his next book, Pandora's Open Box. Tools of Political Economy this research will be presented. His consulting work focuses on European Integration particularly financial integration in the course of enlargement of the EU.
